09 Jun Building Trust in the Age of AI: INATBA’s Report on Blockchain as an Enabler of Trusted AI
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to shape industries from healthcare to finance, concerns around trust, transparency, and accountability are taking center stage. The rapid growth of AI capabilities, paired with the complexity of its decision-making processes, has prompted calls for clearer governance frameworks, particularly in light of regulations such as the EU AI Act.
To help navigate this evolving landscape, INATBA’s AI & Blockchain Convergence Task Force has released a new report: “Blockchain as an Enabler of Trusted AI.” The report explores how blockchain technologies can support the development of AI systems that are not only powerful and efficient, but also fair, transparent, and aligned with human values.
Main Takeaways from the Report
- Ethical Foundations and Real-World Hurdles
The report reaffirms the importance of fairness, accountability, and transparency as essential principles in the design and deployment of AI. Yet it also highlights the practical challenges of putting these ideals into action, from biased datasets and opaque algorithms to unclear lines of responsibility when things go wrong. - Blockchain as a Trust Layer
Blockchain brings unique strengths to the table. Its decentralization supports more distributed governance. Its immutability ensures reliable audit trails. And its transparency can make both data and model logic more accessible for review and oversight. Together, these features offer a foundation for building AI systems that can earn and sustain trust. - Web3 and Participatory Governance
Looking ahead, the report also explores how the broader Web3 ecosystem, including Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), can support more participatory approaches to AI governance. By allowing diverse stakeholders to contribute to decisions about data usage and ethical standards, DAOs have the potential to foster greater accountability and inclusion. - Aligning with ESG Goals
The report also outlines how the convergence of AI and blockchain can advance environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities. Smart contracts can automate compliance, tokenization can encourage sustainable behaviors, and decentralized infrastructure can strengthen transparency and accountability in ESG reporting.
While blockchain offers valuable benefits, the report also highlights key limitations, including privacy challenges like the “right to be forgotten,” scalability issues, and the environmental impact of some consensus mechanisms. It emphasizes that responsible adoption depends on thoughtful, context-specific integration.
Ultimately, building trustworthy AI is not just a technical challenge. It requires clear principles, adaptable governance, and technologies that support transparency and accountability at scale. When thoughtfully combined, AI and blockchain can reinforce each other and help lay the foundation for more ethical, resilient, and future-ready digital economies.
